coffee ice cream topped with mangosteen preserve
What savory or sweet food would you like to have on your birthday? This was KCC's challenge for this month.
It's kinda tough because there are too many dishes to choose from (noodles: palabok, canton, guisado, lasagna, spaghetti with tomato and meat sauce) and I'd rather have lots of sweets and desserts (cakes: mocha chiffon, chocolate, ube, sans rival; ice cream: cheddar cheese, ube, langka, coffee with mangosteen preserve; and leche flan, of course).
I chose to feature Coffee Ice Cream with Mangosteen Preserve, my all-time favorite dessert since it was first introduced in the 80s by Magnolia. I can't remember when and why the flavor was discontinued by the company. About 6 years ago, I started making mangosteen preserve from tinned mangosteen. The fruit preserve is simple and easy to prepare at home. I spoon a large dollop on top of store-bought or homemade coffee ice cream and I enjoy this flavor whenever I want but most specially on my birthday.
To make: boil the syrup from 2 cans of mangosteen with 6 tablespoons sugar until almost caramelized, add the fruits, separated into sections, and cook until thick and dark brown in color.
Kulinarya was started by a group of Filipino foodies living in Sydney (Kath, Trisha, and Trissa), who are passionate about the Filipino culture and its colorful cuisine.
Each month we will showcase a new dish along with their family recipes. By sharing these recipes, we hope you find the same passion and love for Filipino Food as we do.
Thank you Tressa and Jen for hosting this month's challenge.

Hi Oggi,
Wow, that Coffee ice cream with Mangosteen preserve topping looks very yummy and forgive me but if I may describe it as "Sexy." As I type this comment, I can't help but to keep scrolling up to take a peek at the photo, LOL! Thank you for a nice post.
I remember that Magnolia flavor... hmmm Im craving for it. But your mangoosteen preserve looks so luscious i want it on my toast right now.
I've never tried the Magnolia version but this sounds really good. I loved their mangosteen yoghurt and imagine how the coffee ice cream would definitely go with mangosteen preserves.
wow! I could remember Magnolia's version. That used to be my favorite flavor...seeing your version brought back memories...
I remember how I loved the sweet and chewy mangosteen preserves in Magnolia's coffee ice cream. Thanks for the memories!
What a delicious birthday treat! I remember this flavor too. Will definitely try making my own mangosteen preserve too. Great post!
Me likey this :)
Yum! What an unusual combo, but I have to try that one day, for I love coffee and mangosteen! Too bad, no mangosteen here, and when it does come around it's suuuuper expensive! Thanks for joining the fun this month!
Oggi Mangosteen is my all time favourite fruit. It reminds me of clouds when I eat them. I havent heard of them being in cans. I will certainly be looking for them. I wish I had the chance to taste the coffee ice cream at Magnolia. One of the things I miss from the Philippines. You certainly made an original dessert which would be fantastic at any birthday party.
I wish I can get any form of Mangosteen here. I'd eat it like there's no tomorrow.
This looks like a killer combination. Gotta try next time I'm in the PI.
I never had mangoosteen preserve...but it sure looks delicious, specially with the ice cream :-)
Ako rin...parang mayroon akong natatandaan na coffee ice cream of Magnolia with really yummy bits combined to it...nice! I prefer ice cream na made with fruits kaysa iyong standard na choc or vanilla flavour, now i have to look for coffee ice cream when i do my shopping this week, it's so hot at the moment=)
I miss Magnolia's coffee mangosteen. It was my introduction to more complex flavors.
I have never had mangosteen preserve. I have to keep my eye out for for that.
Good choice ! look delicious !
Canned mangosteen? I'd love to get my hands on that. The ice cream combination is such a classic. Thanks for recreating!
oooh! the magnosteen preserve will make any ice cream special
Ha-ha, I'm like Ray! Scrolling back up and again. But then I was doing that on your other post!
It was a tough challenge for me, too, since I wanted EVERYTHING, LOL.
I have to get to know mangosteen, Oggi! Thanks for sharing!
hey, ur mangosteen preserve looks heavenly...so glossy..like liquid amber..we dont get canned mangosteen here, but i cn get fresh ones..wud u b kind to tell me how to make them with tht...wat changes shud i make? there wont be any syrup to boil .so wat shud i do then:)
Hi Leeza,
I'm jealous. We seldom get fresh mangosteen here.
If I have to make preserves with fresh mangosteen, I'd start with:
>25 pieces mangosteen
>¼ pound sugar
>2 tablespoons water
Bring to a boil then lower heat and simmer while stirring until mixture has thickened and turned brown.
Hope that helps.:)
