Maple Walnut Apple Crisp

Labels: , , ,

Apples apples apples! I just love apples. Cakes, muffins, ice cream, pies, you name it, I'll eat it. Today it's an easy baked apple crisp topped with walnuts and oats, the recipe adapted from here. The apples I used called zestar, an early autumn variety, were very fresh from a local apple orchard. They're crispy, tart, and a tad sweet; great for snacks, salads, and baked desserts.

Maple Walnut Apple Crisp
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons fine raw sugar
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
pinch of fine sea salt
6 tablespoons rolled oats
4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
4 tablespoons chopped walnuts

3 pounds apples
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons fine raw sugar
4 tablespoons maple syrup
  • Whisk together flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt. Stir in oats. Cut in butter then stir in walnuts. Set aside. Peel, halve, and core apples. Slice apple halves.
  • Combine all-purpose flour, cinnamon, sugar, and sliced apples. Arrange on an 8 x 8 inch square pan. Drizzle maple syrup all over apples. Top with walnut mixture.
  • Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Serve with French vanilla ice cream.
