Turon Pie

I call this the lazy woman's turon. I was craving for saba turon but didn't want to fry in this heat. I just brushed light olive oil on both sides of 2 pieces of spring roll wrapper, placed them on a small pie plate, filled it with thinly sliced saba banana, brown sugar, and chopped langka (jackfruit). Then I baked it in my toaster oven for about 10 to 12 minutes. I was more than satisfied with my baked turon and I didn't have to heat up a liter of oil. I'll try this with apple too as it's healthier without all the butter in a regular apple pie crust and because I love the sweet crispy wrapper.

Turon Pie
serves 1
2 pieces [Filipino] spring roll wrapper
light olive oil or any vegetable oil
2 pieces medium size ripe saba banana, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar, or to taste
¼ cup chopped ripe jackfruit
  • Brush both sides of wrappers with oil and place on a 6-inch pie plate.
  • Sprinkle bottom with a little sugar. Layer the first saba slices on top of sugar, sprinkle with sugar all over, layer jackfruit on top of saba, layer the second saba slices on top of jackfruit then sprinkle with more sugar. Fold the spring roll edges in, pressing a little to flatten. Sprinkle the folded edges with more sugar.
  • Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in a preheated 450°F oven on the second to the lowest rack. Remove from pan and serve immediately.

  4. I miss turon so much esp with langka. I use to cook and sell those in our mini canteen before but saba is the banana I cannot find here in KSA. Hi this is Ann, visiting from Food Friday :)

  9. Who needs the mess of oil if you don't have to do it. Wrap, place in the oven and sit back and relax. This is a good idea, Oggi. :)
