Homemade Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate Mix

I was going to make crispy cereal marshmallows for Food Friday this week but found out it takes at least 2 days to finish. I'll make and blog about them another day. I made Swiss Miss-style hot chocolate mix instead, recipe inspired by Bravetart of Serious Eats

Although the weather lately is getting milder during the day [but very cold in the early mornings] it's still enjoyable and comforting to have a mug of foamy hot chocolate topped with stale marshmallows. For thick foam I use a battery operated mini beater; no need for a wooden batidor. I ran out of mini marshmallows so I snipped a stale giant marshmallow with a pair of scissors. Gotta have marshmallows with my hot chocolate!

Homemade Swiss Miss-style Hot Chocolate Mix
6 ounces dark or bittersweet cooking chocolate, chopped
2 ounces white chocolate, chopped
4 to 6 tablespoons sugar, powdered in a blender
1 cup powdered whole milk (I used Nido)
seeds of half a vanilla pod
1 teaspoon instant espresso, optional
mini marshmallows
  • In the bowl of a food processor, pulse chocolates and powdered sugar 6 times. Add milk, vanilla seeds, and espresso if using; pulse until powdery. Transfer into an airtight jar.
  • To make a mug of hot chocolate: In a 4-cup measuring cup, microwave 1¼ cups of water to boiling. Add 4 tablespoons of chocolate mix; stir well until chocolate is dissolved. Use a beater if foamy top is desired. Transfer into a mug and top with mini marshmallows. Enjoy.

  2. Why use white chocolate instead of all dark? I find white chocolate incredibly sweet, too sweet, really.

  3. ElsieD,
The recipe is for homemade SWISS MISS Hot Chocolate NOT dark hot chocolate. The small addition of white chocolate according to the creator of the copycat mix "contributes to the body and sweetness of the recipe" and I agree. Besides, there's very little sugar in the mix.
